About the Department
Anesthesiologists are the most important part of the operating room team, in fact they are its secret heroes. Because it is not possible to start the operation without anesthesia. The drugs used to prevent the patient from feeling pain during surgery are determined and administered by the anesthesia and reanimation physician. It is also the most important responsibility of the anesthesiologist to minimize some of the negative effects of anesthesia on the human body and to ensure that the patient wakes up after the operation without any affect to their vital functions.
Temporary loss of consciousness and decreased reflex activity without any change in vital functions is called general anesthesia. General anesthesia application; causes loss of consciousness and prevents the patient’s awareness during surgery, provides comfort to the patient during surgery by eliminating pain, and facilitates the surgical intervention by suppressing reflex activity and muscle relaxation. With these effects, the purpose of general anesthesia is to provide appropriate surgical conditions. However, it is also the duty of the anesthesiologist to maintain the health and safety of the patient during the operation.
Anesthesia can be applied by doctors who have completed their medical education on anesthesia and reanimation. Anesthesia technicians, who are trained to assist anesthesiologists throughout the surgery, are also a very important part of the anesthesia team.
Vascular access is opened first for the patient who is taken to the operating room. Then, the patient is monitored for vital functions such as heart, breathing and blood pressure. After these preparations, for general anesthesia, only under the authority of the anesthesiologist special drugs are administered to the patient through the inserted serum. A special tube is placed in the trachea for respiratory tract continuity and safety. After the safe depth of anesthesia is provided, surgery can be started with the permission of the anesthesiologist. The continuity of anesthesia is provided by the applications on respiratory tract and intravenous drugs together or separately. After the operation, the anesthesia drugs which are used during the operation are terminated and the patient is awakened under the supervision of an anesthesiologist and taken to the recovery room. The patient is warmed up here, their pain is relieved, measures are taken against nausea and vomiting, and he is comfortably sent to his room.
